When was Jesus Born?

Have you ever thought about why we celebrate Jesus' birth on December 25? While it might be challenging to determine the exact date of His birth, there are a few interesting things to consider:

    1. The earliest historical mention of December 25 as the recognized day of observance is in the Philocalian Calendar in the year 336.

    2. While there is no definitive answer as to why December 25 is the date we celebrate the birth of Jesus, there are two predominant ideas:

      1. Some suggest it was to oppose the feast of the Natalis Solis Invicti (birth of the unconquerable sun), the sun god worshipped in Rome.

      2. Others cite ancient Christian traditions which argued that Jesus was conceived and crucified on the same date - March 25 (then count forward).

Over time many other elements have been added to our celebration; trees, presents, lights, carols, Santa Claus, and the list can go on and on.

Regardless of the reasons behind the date or the various additions made over the years, one thing is clear; we don't get to choose WHEN we celebrate Christmas. But we do get to decide WHY we celebrate Christmas.

While traveling, spending time with family, overeating (at least that's what I'm going to do), unwrapping presents, or binge-watching your favorite holiday movies, take a moment to pause and consider why you are celebrating this year.
